Concrete conservation actions to reshape portions of Pantano Longarini carried out during summer 2021 keep showing not only expected results, but sometimes even greater and faster achievements. In particular, creation of new niches to support an increase in Marbled duck population in the area had yielded as a “side” effect the creation of a few islets in N Longarini area with the purpose of attracting a few Terns and Waders species to breed in the area. The goal has been already achieved during the first available breeding season, spring 2022. On newly created islets a brand new colony of Little terns (Sterna albifrons) and many pairs of Black-winged Stilt have bred; both species being the main targets of islets creation, breeding session as also reached very good numbers in terms of number of breeding pairs and of fledged juveniles. Besides, a few pairs of Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) and Little ringed Plover (Charadrius dubius) also benefitted or islets to breed, but most welcome and unexpected surprise was certainly a pair of Collared Pratincole (Glareola pratincola), not recorded in the area as breeder since decades. On the basis of the described results, as the breeding season will be totally over the islets bundle will be enlarged with new islets which will be differentiated in size and other features as to increase both the number of breeding pairs and the number of species potentially breeding in the future on the islets.
