II WORKSHOP FOR THE EXCHANGE OF EXPERIENCES ON ECOLOGY AND MONITORING OF THE MARBLED DUCK IN THE MEDITERRANEAN ARCH

From 24 to 26 March has been held in Ragusa the second international workshop on the Marbled duck (Marmaronetta angustirostris), a species seriously threatened with extinction and only living in some areas of the Mediterranean including Sicily and in particular the Pantani della Sicilia sud orientale area. The conference brought together international experts on this species, administrations in charge of managing wetlands and protected areas, nature conservation associations and NGOs, universities and research centers in Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. The aim of the conference was to update the status of the species in the countries of the Mediterranean basin and share the results of the two projects LIFE Marbled duck PSSO (Italy) and LIFE Cerceta pardilla (Spain) in relation to the recovery and restoration of wetlands for the creation of better conditions for the species, the reintroduction and GPS tracking program, ex-situ conservation measures, the involvement of various stakeholders and communication activities. Among the most important results, an international working group has been established for the coordination of actions and monitoring of the species in the circum-Mediterranean countries.

The workshop was organized in collaboration between the 2 LIFE Marbled duck PSSO https://lifemarbledduck.eu/ and LIFE Cerceta pardilla projects https://www.cerceta-pardilla.es/en/
